The Figure Emerges
The “figure” emerged through repetitive, self - representational drawings which Ryn began in childhood. These remerged throughout her college studio courses. Upon graduation Ryn joined MINT collective in Columbus, OH where she scanned select drawings and digitally printed transparencies or “negatives” which she used to make cyanotypes.
From here, she began using ink and brush and ink pen to “draw” directly onto transparencies revealing prints with “floating” movement - like characteristics.
In 2016, she participated in a residency “Dark Matter” at Port Gallery in New Orleans. The residency was directed by artist Heather Hanson who led participants through intuitive, movement - based drawing exercises. Here, Ryn formed a strong connection between the body and mark - making, drawing kinetically and in response to an inner sense.
Her first collection of work, The figure emerges (2016 - 2018) features prints from this foundational time in her practice, establishing a relationship between movement, mark - making, and the cyanotype process.
