The “figure” emerged through repetitive, self - representational drawings which Ryn began in childhood. These remerged throughout her college studio courses. In 2015, Ryn joined MINT collective in Columbus, OH, where she created digital scans which she printed on transparencies to make cyanotype “negatives.”

From here, she developed the process and began using ink and brush and ink pen to “draw” directly onto transparencies. She used these “drawn negatives” to also print cyanotypes revealing works with “floating” movement - like characteristics.

In 2016, she participated in a residency “Dark Matter” at Port Gallery in New Orleans. The residency was directed by artist Heather Hanson who led participants through intuitive, movement - based drawing exercises. Here, Ryn formed a strong connection between the body and mark - making, drawing kinetically and in response to an inner sense.

Her first collection of work, The figure emerges (2016 - 2018) features prints from this foundational time in her practice, establishing a relationship between movement, mark - making, and the cyanotype process.
